Our client, a leading personal care and hygiene manufacturer in the Philippines, uses water as a major raw material. Their Reverse Osmosis (RO) systems run 16-hour days, which puts them under pressure to ensure sufficient volume to meet production requirements.

Key Challenges

Faced with the challenge of erratic water supply and varying water conditions, the client contacted Technotest to do a comprehensive review of their system to devise a solution that would allow them to operate their RO at a sustained high yield. At the same time, the client wanted to see not only reductions in production cost but also improved efficiency for their RO systems which would result to longer membrane life.

Integrated Solution

Identifying that the main challenge being rooted in the varying conditions of their feedwater, our approach focused on both the major overhaul of their RO configuration and a change in the operational parameters that would deliver the desired yield over a longer sustained period of time. Specifically:

1. RO System Optimization: Technotest reconfigured the RO system to a 1-pass three- stage setup and placed an adequate control mechanism that allowed for reliable and on-time measurements. This reconfiguration enabled the client operators to quickly react to changes and abnormalities as it happens, preventing significant downtime and allowing for better anticipation of problems.

2. Improved Pre-Treatment Process: Technotest introduced a condition-based pretreatment protocol which addressed the varying conditions of their source water. This major change resulted to a more reliable and predictable yield and preserved their membrane for longer use.
